Hitachi ROPITS - Tiny, self-driving robotic car uses GPS system to carry its single passenger

Google's self-driving smart-cars are not the only option in the niche, almost every major automaker is incorporating smart self-driving features in there vehicles. To add another SmartCar to the ever expanding catalogue, we now have Hitachi ROPITS (Robot for Personal Intelligent Transport System) as the latest to join the club.

The tiny, single passenger, electric car is aimed to assist elderly citizens and physically handicapped to move around the city. The car features a tablet loaded with maps, the user just need to tell where to go and rest is taken care by the car. Using laser distance and range sensor, special stereoscopic camera, gyro sensors and GPS the car can detect uneven sections, potholes, pedestrians and bumps through an enhanced three-dimensional map.
