Micrsoft DirectX has been always the technology driving graphic card sales, but this might change soon. Back in January Microsoft sent a letter to its MVPs saying "DirectX is no longer evolving as a technology. Given the status within each technology, further value and engagement cannot be offered to the MVP community." However, this was later clarified with an official announcement that XNA was being discontinued not DirectX.
Now, adding more support to this suggestion, AMD's Vice President of Global Channel Sales - Roy Taylor has said there will be no DirectX12 at any time in the future during an interview given to a German magazine.
Further explaining his comments, Taylor said :
"..the computer industry has benefited over the years from the constant updating of DirectX. Over and over again a new DirectX has refreshed the industry; new graphics cards need more powerful processors and more RAM. But there will be no DirectX 12. That's it. To our knowledge there are no plans for DirectX 12 If someone wants to correct me - wonderful. But now we really need excellent games like Crysis or Bioshock Infinite 3, on the one hand to encourage the industry and also to reward our buyers. Never Settle is therefore strategically very important for us and will continue to include top titles."
Since, Microsft has earlier clarified that they are actively investing in DirectX as the unified graphics foundation for there key platforms like Xbox 360, Windows Phone and Windows - DirectX is evolving and will continue to evolve. We can safely assume even if there will be no DirectX 12, Microsoft will continue, extend and fix the existing one.

There may be DX12, when the xbox720 is dead and buried, in 5+ years. But by then Microsoft may have just switched to OpenGL. There's no need for them to continue investing money in this when everything that is not windows, doesn't use it. OpenGL is just as good, if not better, it's also easier to make multi platform games with it. So when DX die down, we may actually see many more games compatible with Linux.
