Drunk driving is the reason behind 10,000 deaths each year, 25 states in USA impose ignition interlock devices for drunk driving offenders which require them to blow into a breathalyzer to start the car. A new "Smart Car" technology called Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety (DADSS) aims to change that with automated, transparent, noninvasive alcohol safety check in all cars. The technology will automatically detect when a driver is intoxicated with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) at or above .08 and prevent the car from moving. It will be made available as a safety option in new vehicles - like automatic braking, lane departure warning and other advanced driver assist vehicle technologies. False positives?
So when your drunk friend turns to you and talks, he can breath his alcohol into your airspace and stop your car? Does it differentiate between a molecule you drank and one you're wearing? Is a bartender ever going to be able to drive home after serving drinks for 8 hours? Can you beat the breathalyzer by blowing positive ventilation past the inhaler ports? I can't see it as an option anyone would buy.

These are the questions which would be addressed I guess, for example as of now it says the system will be using the HVAC system to analyze the air precisely from the driver seat only but I think it can be fine tuned to detect and differentiate a momentary alcohol breath from a friends talk and a continuous stream from the driver.
